Why do people go to Cable Beach?

Located on the western side of Yorke Peninsula, Cable Bay Beach is a lesser-known stretch of coastline known for its natural beauty, calm waters, and low-key atmosphere.  

As one of the quieter Yorke Peninsula beaches, Cable Bay Beach SA offers a peaceful alternative to the region’s more developed towns. The area is often described as a hidden gem, with a mix of reef-protected shallows, low dunes, and wide open sky. 

One of its most recognisable features is the camel rides that operate along the shore at sunset – a much-photographed activity that’s become synonymous with Broome. But there’s more to do than just take photos. Swimming is popular thanks to calm, clear water and relatively flat conditions. The beach is also patrolled in peak seasons, making it suitable for families with children. 

Cable Beach sits just outside of Broome, so it’s easy to combine with local markets, coastal walks, and Indigenous cultural experiences. From October to February, wildlife enthusiasts also visit to witness the turtle nesting season. During these months, sections of the beach may be restricted, and lighting is reduced at night to protect hatchlings.  

Whether you're after a laid-back swim, a spot for morning yoga, or a sunset camel photo, Cable Beach delivers the kind of warm, low-key atmosphere that keeps people coming back. 

How long should I spend at Cable Beach?

You can see the main highlights of Cable Beach in a single day – swimming, relaxing, and watching the sunset – but many visitors choose to stay 2–3 days to enjoy it at a slower pace. 

Spending a couple of nights allows time to explore more of Broome’s local food scene, wander through the Broome Courthouse Markets, or take a half-day trip out to Gantheaume Point or Roebuck Bay. 

For those travelling by campervan, staying longer also provides more flexibility for early swims and unhurried sunsets without needing to re-park each time.

Cable Beach is popular for its combination of stunning natural beauty and easy accessibility. Visitors come for:

How to get to Cable Beach

Cable Beach is just a 5–10 minute drive west of Broome’s town centre. 

• From the Broome Highway, follow Gubinge Road until you reach Cable Beach Road West. 

• Continue west until the road ends – this takes you directly to the main beach access and car park area. 

The route is fully sealed and accessible for all vehicle types, including campervans. There’s no public transport to the beach, so driving or cycling is the best option. 

Best time to visit Cable Beach

The ideal time to visit Cable Beach is during the dry season (May to October). Days are warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 30°C. Conditions are ideal in Cable Bay for swimming and camping, beach walks, and enjoying the outdoors without humidity. 

Sunset is the most popular time of day to visit – particularly between 5pm and 6pm, when the sky often fills with colour. This is also when camel rides are at their most photogenic. 

Morning is another good time, especially if you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. If visiting during the wet season (November to April), be prepared for high humidity, possible road closures, and fewer tour operations. 

Weather at Cable Beach

Cable Beach has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: 

• Dry season (May–October): Sunny, low humidity, daytime highs between 26°C–30°C 

• Wet season (November–April): Hot, humid, and prone to heavy rain or cyclones 

Swimming is most comfortable during the dry months. From November to April, marine stingers may be present, so check conditions before entering the water. 

Best place to park your campervan at Cable Beach

There is a dedicated car park at the main beach access point on Cable Beach Road West, with plenty of space for vehicles of all sizes, including campervans and motorhomes. 

While vehicle access onto the beach is permitted for 4WDs, it’s not recommended for campervans, as the soft sand can cause vehicles to get stuck. Use the sealed car park instead, and be aware of turtle nesting zones, which may restrict vehicle movement in some areas between October and February. 

Parking is free, and facilities like toilets, showers, and picnic shelters are located nearby.
