BRANCH LOCATION AND HOURS

+ Do you offer limited contact vehicle collection and return?

All vehicles must be picked up and dropped off during the opening hours of your Cheapa Campa branch. Please reach out to our friendly team if you’re unable to make it in time.

To aid with social distancing and reduce contact with our team while COVID-19 is a health concern, Cheapa Campa have introduced limited contact vehicle collection processes. Our rental agreement and other documentation can be emailed to guests and our How To videos provide a great overview of how to use your camper. Be sure to download the thl Roadtrip app to access this handy info while on the road.

+ What are the branch opening hours and locations?

CLICK HERE for all of our Cheapa Campa locations. For opening days and hours go to the location page of your Cheapa Campa branch.

+ How do I get to the branch?

Cheapa Campa branches are conveniently located near major cities and airports which makes them easy to find and convenient for pick up and drop off of your motorhome or camper. You can arrange transport to our branches using taxi, Uber or public transport. CLICK HERE to find out the exact address of your Cheapa Campa branch.

+ Are there any restrictions on where I can drive?

At Cheapa Campa, we want you to stay safe on your road trip. All 2WD rental vehicles must stay on sealed roads. The only exception to this policy is well maintained access roads that are shorter than 10kms and lead to a recognised campground. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for more information about travel restrictions that apply.

There are restrictions on where you can drive our 4WD vehicles in Australia and we recommend that you always drive to the conditions and within your experience level. There are also certain roads that require you to obtain permission from Cheapa Campa before travelling on them as well as roads that are completely off limits.

All 2WD and 4WD vehicles are not permitted to drive on any beaches.

+ What type of payments do you accept in your branch?

All Cheapa Campa branches accept credit card or debit card for rental charges. Cash payments are not accepted.

Your vehicle bond can only be paid by credit card. You cannot pay your bond using a prepaid card.

+ Do you allow pick up or drop off outside of branch hours?

All guests are required to pick up and drop off during the hours specified for each branch.

DRIVER LICENCE

+ How old do I need to be to drive a Cheapa Campa motorhome or camper?

Mighty Campers (Highball and Double Down), Cheapa Campa (Hitop and Endeavour) and Hippie (Hitop and Endeavour) drivers must be 18 years of age or over with a full driver licence.

For all other RV types drivers must be 21 years of age or over with a full driver licence and the licence must be valid for the entire booking duration.

+ Do all drivers need to be present at the depot during pick up?

All drivers are required to show their driver licence to the branch, in person, prior to driving the vehicle. We prefer that drivers show their licence at pick up, however if that’s not possible, drivers may visit the branch prior to pick up and show their driver licence to a Cheapa Campa team member.

+ What type of driver licence do I need?

A current and full motor vehicle driver licence is required to be shown at pick-up and all drivers need to be present. If the driver licence is not in English then we require an accredited English translation or an International Driver Permit. We do not accept Digital Driver licences.

It is important to select the correct country in which the driver licence was issued to ensure correct rates are calculated. If the hirer presents a driver licence that is from a different country to which the booking was created the guest may incur additional charges.

VEHICLES

+ Will my campervan have wheelchair access?

Unfortunately, our campervans and motorhomes are not equipped with wheelchair access. Additionally, the interior space is quite limited, and therefore does not accommodate a wheelchair.

+ Can I bring my bike?

Our motorhomes and campervans don’t have bike racks. Bikes may be stored inside the motorhome, however we request that bikes are stored in bike bags to avoid any damage to the interior of the motorhome.

+ How long does the battery system last?

Our vehicles operate on ancillary battery systems which power internal appliances such as the fridge, lights, media player and water pump.

We recommend that customers plug their campervan into an external 240v power on the first night of their hire and every second night thereafter. The battery system will provide power for between 12 - 20 hours when fully charged depending on use.

When you are connected, all equipment automatically runs on mains power rather than the battery. Appliances such as the microwave, rear air-conditioning and power points only run on mains power. Media Screen may run either on 240v (mains power) or 12v (battery power).

For the 12 Volt system to work, the 12 Volt main switch must be in the 'on' position. All vehicles can be connected to 240 Volt mains power via the supplied 15 Amp extension lead with a large earth pin. All approved caravan park circuits are rated at 15 amps.

+ Can I request a specific layout or vehicle length?

Vehicles can be requested by vehicle category, however we cannot guarantee a particular vehicle layout, make or model.

+ Will my vehicle be automatic or manual transmission?

All of our rental vehicles are automatic transmission.

+ Are dogs allowed to travel in the vehicle?

At Cheapa Campa, we’re happy for your pet dog to go on holiday with you but there is a pet cleaning fee of $250 if picking up on or before 31 March 2024. Picking up on or after 1 April 2024 is a pet cleaning fee of $299. For more information visit here

+ Do your motorhomes & campervans have Wi-Fi?

Our vehicles do not come with Wi-Fi.

+ How much do your vehicles weigh?

All Cheapa Campa motorhomes and campers are less than 4.5 tonnes and can be driven by overseas licence holders.

+ Do I have to pay per kilometre (km)?

Most of the 2WD motorhomes and campervan rentals come with unlimited kilometres. 4WD vehicles and relocations have a daily kilometre allowance. For more info on this, please see our terms & conditions.

PLACES TO STAY

+ Where can we camp at night?

We strongly recommend you stay at a campground, holiday park or RV/caravan park. RV/caravan parks offer excellent recreational opportunities, plus essential shower and toilet facilities. Powered sites enable you to connect your vehicle to electricity.

In Australia and New Zealand, download the thl Roadtrip App from the App Store or Google Play.

What is the thl Roadtrip App?

If you are travelling with us, the thl Roadtrip App is your go-to before you travel and while you're on the road. Access handy tips from planning and preparation, what to expect at pick-up, a full show-through video of the camper you have booked and comprehensive on-the-road CamperHelp ‘how to’ videos. We guide you through preparing your camper for drop-off and finally, make it easy for you to go again – be it through renting or buying.

How will the app help you plan your roadtrip?

1. Find everything you need

The thl Roadtrip App displays your current GPS location then shows the nearest campsite and holiday parks, (free and paid), petrol station, free wifi, real-time road alerts, supermarkets, dump stations, public toilets, LPG filling stations, laundromats and in fact pretty much everything you need when you're on the road in Australia.

2. Watch the Show-through video of your camper

The thl Roadtrip App includes a full show-through video of your camper - showing you what it looks like and where to find everything. It's a requirement that you watch this video before you get here as it forms part of the pick-up process in the branch.

3. Watch the CamperHelp ‘How to’ Videos

We feature a bunch of useful 'CamperHelp' videos, showing you how to use the features of your camper - from plugging into power, to emptying the toilet cassette, setting up the dining tables and making the beds – you’ll be a pro in no time.

4. Plan your trip and book campgrounds and attractions directly in the app

Be organised and search along your planned itinerary route to pre-book campsites, holiday parks, attractions and experiences directly within the app.

5. Offline Content

One of the best features of the thl Roadtrip App is, no matter where you are, the maps work offline, you don’t need a Wi-Fi connection to be able to use the maps when you’re out of range, you just need to save them first. Perfect for itinerary planning when you are a bit more off the grid as Australia is big place with sometimes-limited mobile reception areas.

All videos within the app also feature the transcripts in different languages. We recommend you download these to your device before you leave to ensure you have access to them in case you do not have access to Wi-Fi or data connection on the road.

6. Join the conversation with other travellers

If you like reading user tips and feedback about places to stay and things to do, then the thl Roadtrip App will be super helpful for you. As a user of the app you are able to leave your own feedback and read others comments and recommendations - very handy if you are trying to decide where to stay for the night and you want to know which campground is more preferred by fellow roadtrippers.

Download for iPhone here or Android here.

*We are part of a collaborative project called GeoZone which aims to make it easier to travel responsibly by sharing facility locations, so if you find something not on the app, or if you find a location that's no longer there, you can submit it through the app and contribute to this awesome project.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE PICK UP

+ What to do before pick up

Before you arrive:

  • Complete your Self Check-In.  All guests need to check-in ahead of their pick-up, the same way you would check-in for a flight. We recommend you complete the Self Check-in 30 days prior to pick-up to ensure we have the right information about you, and all guests who will be driving the camper during your trip.

  • Please keep an eye on your inbox, for additional pre-trip advice.

  • Take the time to read the Rental Agreement. To ensure we’re on the same page before your adventure begins, please give this a read and make sure everything's in order ahead of signing at pick-up.

  • For a smooth and enjoyable pick-up experience, we encourage you to download the thl Roadtrip App from the Apple Store or Google Play and watch our handy show-through videos.

  • Pack your Driver's Licence. It is vital that you bring your physical Driver's Licence with you. If your driver's licence is not in English then we require an accredited English translation or an International Driver's permit, along with your driver's licence. We must sight both at pick-up otherwise we cannot release the vehicle.

Getting to us:

  • If you’re flying in ahead of your trip, we know a long flight can be tiring. We recommend you stay in a hotel close to your pick-up branch location the night before you collect your camper; ensuring you are well-rested and ready to go the next day.
  • If you are planning to fly in on the same day you pick-up your camper, we recommend you limit your driving distances and settle into a campground or holiday park to familiarise yourself with the camper and your holiday destination.
  • Unfortunately, we don't offer guest parking at our branches. We kindly ask that you arrange your own transportation to and from the branch using public transport, taxi, or rideshare options. Please note that the days and hours of operation for our Australian branches may vary, so it's a good idea to check your specific branch’s hours in advance.
  • For more details, please check out the Branch locations page.

+ Should I download the thl Roadtrip app?

Yes, thl Roadtrip contains a section of safe driving videos, which you will need to view prior to starting your road trip. You can also watch our RV “How To” videos.

+ Do I need to supply all driver details?

We encourage you to enter all driver details online through our online check in link prior to pick up. You will need your reservation/booking reference and the surname of the booking. You are not required to enter passenger details, only drivers.

PICK UP PROCESS

+ What should I expect on Pick-up?

In branch and collecting your camper

  • When you arrive, make your way to the check-in counter. Have your driver's license and credit card at the ready to enable us to handle your booking.

  • If there are any extra hire items you have decided to add to your booking, you can do so at this time.

  • A member of our crew will then take you to your camper. This will give you the chance to have a good look around and ask your Branch Host any questions you have before hitting the road. We want to give each guest the space to ask any questions they may have to ensure they can get on the road safely, and with confidence. Our crew will do their best to get you on the road as soon as possible, but we find some guests need more time than others to pick up a camper, as there a few more things to run through than with a usual car hire. This may delay your departure, so please allow plenty of time for pick-up in your itinerary.

  • You can also re-watch our show-through videos in the thl Roadtrip App whenever you need to. There are also a bunch of 'CamperHelp how-to’ videos, showing you how to use different features of your camper. From plugging into power, to emptying the toilet cassette, setting up the dining tables and making the beds - you'll be a pro in no time!

  • Pack your belongings into the camper and hit the road! Remember, don't drive too far on your first day and make sure you have a campsite booked at a holiday park to plug into power, fully charge your battery and settle into your camper.

+ How long will it take to check out my vehicle?

We encourage guests to allow at least 1 hour for vehicle pick-up. One of our Guest Service Officers (GSO) will take you through the Rental Agreement (RA) and show you through your vehicle. During peak times your wait time may be longer than expected.

“How To” vehicle videos can be viewed via our thl Roadtrip app at any time, which is downloadable on the App Store or Google Play.

ON THE ROAD

+ Leaving the branch

  • We advise that you plug in to 240V mains power (for vehicles that feature 240V) on your first night to fully charge the camper battery. Use the thl Roadtrip App to find and book a campground in advance.

  • We strongly recommend you purchase a local SIM Card or eSim so you can call local numbers, including our On Road Assist team, should you need to.

  • Your camper has a functioning kitchenette; after you leave the branch, head to a local supermarket enroute and stock up on groceries and road trip treats.

  • Be familiar with local road rules and safe driving recommendations. Things may be a little different than you’re used to.

  • Once you’re all settled in your camper for the night, you can also re-watch our show-through video in the thl Roadtrip App whenever you need to. There are also a bunch of 'CamperHelp how-to’ videos, showing you how to use different features of your camper. From plugging into power, to emptying the toilet cassette, setting up the dining tables and making the beds - you'll be a pro in no time!

+ How often should I take a break?

We encourage you to always allow extra time for reaching your destination. Please take a break from driving every 2 hours.

+ Do I have to pay to use toll roads in Australia?

You will likely encounter toll roads if you are driving through Metropolitan New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

When driving a thl rental vehicle in Australia, you are responsible for the costs of the toll charges, so it is important to be aware of these roads before you travel. These toll roads are electronically tolled, which means you will not be able to stop and pay cash.

However, our campers are registered for automatic tolling, which means you don’t need to do a thing. If you drive on a toll road, the toll charge will be paid by thl and thl will then charge the credit card that is on file for your booking for the toll charge, along with an administration fee per toll.

thl will send you an email confirming the cost of the toll and the time and date when you travelled on any toll road. Click here for more information, including a map of toll road locations.
